The first ever cohort to attend the new Jumbla Academy has just graduated!

The students have been coming into our Melbourne studios two days a week for the past 13 weeks. They spent the first six weeks doing intensive training in a range of suites and plugins, including After Effects, Photoshop, Element 3D, Cinema 4D and more.

The following six weeks of the program was spent developing their own character animations and putting their skills into practice on mock client briefs. In the final week, students were given a crash course insight into the industry, in addition to compiling their own showreels.

The course was run by our training guru, Lahiru. “The goal of the course was to get our students ‘studio ready’ and I honestly think we’ve now got some legitimate animators and motion designers here,” he says.

“What a great teacher they must have had,” he adds, half-jokingly, half-because it’s the truth.

“Seeing the confidence in their own work grow as the course progressed was fantastic. The contrast between the work they’re producing now, compared to when they started, is like night and day.”

Check out some of the work they ended up producing:

Of course, it’s not just about producing great work. Part of the Jumbla Academy experience is having a great time and discovering a passion for animation and motion graphics.

Here’s what some of the students had to say about their time at Jumbla academy:

Mei “We were taught a lot about how to use After Effects. I mean I knew how to use it basically before, but to use it to its full extent and actually understand the program was quite unique to this course.”

Dael “At uni, what they teach you is really broad – like they teach you a lot of things, but nothing “specifically” really well. So, it feels a lot more focused here. It’s just been incredible, really.”

Laura “I feel like I’ve learned more in this class in 3 months than I have in the first year of uni.”

Sam “I feel like my skills are so much more relevant and applicable.”

Alex, “It’s basically what I thought it was going to be – except better!”

Our creative director Cal says it’s been great having the students under our roof.

“At Jumbla, we’re a young company, so we do remember what it was like trying to crack the industry. That’s why we created this course. We basically realised that there are a lot of students out there graduating from university, but they’re separated from this industry – they’re on the other side of the river. Jumbla Academy is kind of like a bridge: it’s a connection between the uni world and the working world,” says Cal.

“That gap exists because most uni grads are slightly lacking in the “hands-on” skills applied in a context that involves briefs, clients, storyboards and so forth. This course helps students navigate that transition.”

“It’s been great hearing the feedback from this cohort, as it shows our unique approach to teaching is working. We hope that by studying under Lahiru’s mentor-ship, by applying themselves to briefs and projects and by being surrounded with real-world creatives working on actual client projects, the students are more inspired than ever before to pursue a career in this industry. No doubt, some of them could return in the near future as interns or as hired staff!”

We at Jumbla have had a great time meeting this semester’s students (even the ones who beat us at table tennis). We wish them all the best in the future!
